Once war begins and American soldiers are under fire, a rational discussion of the pros and cons of war becomes nearly impossible. That is exactly why our Founders wrote a Constitution that demands a debate before the initiation of war.
But there was no debate in Congress, let alone a vote. On Feb. 28, Americans awoke to discover that their country was once again embroiled in a war in the Middle East.
Americans were not asked if they would bear the burdens of war. Instead, the American people were told, through a presidential eight-minute video posted around 2:30 in the morning, that the country was, once again, at war.
And because there was no national discussion about going to war, we do not know whether ground troops will be used. We have no idea how long the war will last. We have no idea who will lead Iran after the death of the supreme leader. And we have no idea how many casualties the American people are supposed to tolerate. We cannot know the answer to these questions because no one bothered to make the case that war with Iran was worth the sacrifice.
The Senate is only now debating whether hostilities should end after they’ve already begun. Before I discuss the merits of this war, I want to say that my prayers, and those of my family, are with the troops in the region, those in combat and anyone who may be called to serve.
I do not take lightly that combat has begun, that many have been severely injured, and that lives have been lost.

There was a buildup of American forces in the region for weeks. Anyone could see what was about to happen unless Iran made changes.
Well, Rand, twerp, Congress did debate and decided not to oppose.
Thomas Jefferson was closer to the Constitution than Rand Paul, and he went to war without a Congressional declaration.
There is a difference between making war, as the Commander in Chief, and declaring war, which is the duty of Congress.
And Congress debating whether to go to war, when presently wars start at the speed of light?
Campaigned on ending the endless and has a mandate by the People to obliterate and drain.
National Emergencies tend to just continue from Carter forward with no resolution.
It looks like Venezuela and Iran emergencies are being dealt with.
Wonder how much of Venezuela or Iran has had to do with anything that’s happened to the President and Commander in Chief since 2016.
The power of Congress to declare war is the powey to initiate hostilities against another country that has not yet attacked us. It is NOT a required authorization to retaliate.
We can also be in a state of war with another country when they initiate hostilities against us, which is the situation with Iran.
President Trump, as Commander-in-Chief is well within his own power to wage that war. The War Powers Act does not apply here because there is no "chief" above the President whom he must check in with when we are already at war, as much as people like Rand want to micromanage him. Congress' only power is the Article I Section 8 power to fund the army for no longer than two years. If Congress disagrees with what the Commander-in-Chief is doing, they can always vote to not reauthorize funding for the military. They can also vote to not confirm any more officers in the military that President Trump might want or need.
But that's all they can do now, short of impeachment,but that would be seen as siding with the mullahs in Iran and supporting ongoing terrorism and the subjugation of women.

I posted a response to your post and even after checking it to see if it was OK, I TOTALLY MISSED the word “little” in front of “your service”.
My son is a veteran, and was stationed at Khobar Towers when it was attacked killing more than 40 airmen.
On his day off, my husband came running into my work place and all he could say was “BOMB”.
I will NEVER forget that day, and will also NOT forgive those who disparage the members of our Armed I Forces!!

Rand Paul has an F- SCORECARD from NUMBERS USA IN REGARDS TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. HE LOVES CHEAP LABOR for his big campaign contributions companies. His CONSTITUENTS DIDN’T VOTE FOR THIS.
According to Paul’s vision, it would be best to have a full discussion, before striking the enemy, so the enemy has a fair chance of fending off any attack by building up its forces first.
But an enemy, like Iran, who could potentially, given enough time with Congressional arguing, have made and mounted nukes on missiles strike first against any US troop build up.
Paul would apparently be happy with that outcome, since he could argue & vote against any US retaliation.

No, Rand Paul, like Justin Scalia and Justice Thomas, is a constitutionalist. He believes in the rule of law as written in the Constitution.
The Constitution is clear on the requirement that Congress declare war before the Commander in Chief uses US military forces to attack a foreign nation. All President Trump needs to do is go to Congress and ask for a Declaration of War, like Franklin Roosevelt did in 1941, Woodrow Wilson did for WWI, William McKinley did for the Spanish American War, James K. Polk did for the Mexican War, and James Madison did for the War of 1812.
In 1800 the Barbary pirates of North Africa were harassing and attacking American merchant shipping in the Mediterranean. President Thomas Jefferson decided in 1801 to put a stop to it using the US military. Before acting he followed the Constitution and obtained from Congress a formal Declaration of War against the Pasha of Tripoli. Between 1801 and 1805 the United States engaged in a number of naval battles with the the pirates of Tripoli. This was the first military engagement overseas in American history. Jefferson properly followed the Constitution in obtaining a Congressional Declaration of War before deploying the military. The United States was victorious in the war and secured a peace treaty guaranteeing US merchants would not be attacked and would no longer pay tribute.
Note that Jefferson followed the Constitution and obtained authorization from Congress to send the US Navy and Marine Corps into war. Jefferson, unlike Trump, chose to follow the Constitution before sending US forces into action in a foreign land. Thomas Jefferson would agree 100% with Rand Paul on the decision to attack Iran.
President Trump is 100% in violation of the Constitution with respect to the attack on Iran. He should have gone to Congress, made his case and asked for a Declaration of War. The Constitution gives the president the power as commander in chief to prosecute a war once Congress has declared war. No where in the Constitution does the president have the power to initiate a war. Unfortunately the presidents since Franklin Roosevelt have ignored the Constitution and initiated wars in Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Afghanistan, Iraq, Venezuela, Iran and other nations. The cost to the taxpayers in blood and money has been tremendous as a result of these unconstitutional wars.
Do you remember Vietnam where over 50,000 US soldiers died as a result of President Johnson’s failed effort to keep communist North Vietnam from conquering South Vietnam? Ultimately his successors Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford tired of the unpopular, and undeclared war. The United States withdrew, South Vietnam fell to North Vietnam, and today united Vietnam is a communist nation. How about Afghanistan which the US conquered and occupied for 19 years, based on the unconstitutional authority of successive commander in chiefs, only to scurry out on the whim of a new commander in chief.
You might also remember the Korean War which ended in a stalemate cease fire along the boundaries in effect between north and south at the beginning of the war. Over 30,000 US troops killed. Today North Korea is a nuclear power developing intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons to the US homeland. We are less safe today from North Korea than we were in 1953 when the cease fire was signed. Strangely, we are not attacking North Korea today to remove its very real nuclear capability which is much more of a threat to the homeland than Iran was when the US attacked Iran recently.
The Constitution requires Congress to declare war in order to avoid the costly disasters of Vietnam and Afghanistan. It is one of the checks and balances in our system of government. This requirement ensures there will be a national debate before the representatives of the people in Congress commit the nation to the cost in blood and treasure of a military conflict.
If President Trump, or any other president, believes the power to drag the nation into military conflict should lie with the Executive Branch and not the Legislative Branch, he can request Congress and the states pass a Constitutional amendment to give the power to the president. Until then he must abide by the Constitution he swore an oath to uphold.

The balance between the duties of the Commander in Chief and Congress changed by Ww2 with the advent of Air Forces and submarines —- there just isn’t time to wait for Congress to debate and pass anything.
There is an updated paradigm — made even more necessary in recent times by
1. Well- financed, well- organized international terrorism
2. Air Force’s that can bomb USA with little advance notice
3. Space forces that can do likewise
4. Nuclear etc bombs that can take out large USA cities with but a single hit
5. ICBM’s
6. Submarines
7. Chemical warfare and terrorism
8. Biological warfare and terrorism.
9.Islamicist terrorist sleeper cells in USA
and more. There isn’t time anymore to wait around for congressional deliberations, debates, and declarations.
Especially this is true due to :
