It’s officially been known as Baja California since at least 1848. The area now known as the US state of California was known as Alta California, or Upper California, while the lower peninsula was called Baja California, or lower California.

During the time of Mexican rule, those 2 names were used to distinguish the two areas of California . It’s called Baja for short, but as long as any of us have been alive, the official name has been Baja California. So no, they did not add the name California to Baja California 50 years ago.

That's correct Dilbert, I learned about Baja California in school in the late 1950s.
