The parents who did that deed are either ancient or dead now. And it was by no means unanimous, anymore than the anti-ICE rioters or the Floyd rioters were unanimous. They shouted down and threatened any dissenters.

Not to mention the world those parents were fighting for in 1979 no longer exists. The entire world has changed a lot since then. Just look at cell phones then versus today. Or computers, the internet, etc.
