Trump Throws In the Towel on Minneapolis Surge
National Review ^ | 02/15/2026 | The Editors

President Trump sent Tom Homan to Minneapolis to declare victory and go home, and so he has.

Trump’s border czar announced the end of the ICE surge that had roiled the city and our national politics. Homan says ICE is getting more cooperation from county jails in handing over incarcerated illegal aliens, and immigration authorities have detained many of the illegal immigrants they had been targeting. It’s not clear how extensive the supposed new cooperation is, but Homan certainly forged a better relationship with state and city officials.

The big story here is that semiorganized resistance on the streets, with the support of the elected leadership in Minnesota and Minneapolis, made the aggressive federal enforcement too painful to continue. Usually, in sheer political terms, when mobs are arrayed against law enforcement, law enforcement prevails.

Facts are stubborn things. Hennipen County is only handing over illegals with judicial warrants which is a tiny minority of immigration cases. Still ignorning ICE detainers and releasing criminal illegals with them, not verifying immigration status, etc., etc.

I agree with your skepticism...About "cooperation" from Democratic politicians in Minnesota...

Walz and Frey realized, in my opinion, that President sent Mr. Homan to Minnesota to end the operation as soon as possible...They agreed to "cooperate" just to make sure that additional agents leave...

I do not know how long this "cooperation" will last...I would not be too surprised if Walz and Frey end this "cooperation" after a few months...Why not?

I do not think President will send more agents to Minnesota again because Walz and Frey decided to end the "cooperation"...

We’ll just call this battlefield surrender winning because, frankly, we can’t do anything else with the midterms coming up and GOTV critical.

I agree...President had no choice...
