Bend skier Hunter Hess is feeling "mixed emotions" about representing the U.S. at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
Hess spoke during a news conference in Milan on Friday with the Team USA freeski halfpipe squad. He was reportedly asked what it means to wear Team USA gear and the American flag amid the Trump administration's immigration arrests.
"It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now I think," Hess said. "It's a little hard. There's obviously a lot going on that I'm not the biggest fan of and I think a lot of people aren't. I think for me, it's more I'm representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S."
Hess reiterated that his focus remains on competing for those closest to him and those who have helped get to the Olympic stage.

That’s the asumption, based on the way the question was asked. But I am embarrassed at the stupidity of the American people on display before the whole world right now. It reminds me of somebody in Europe who said that what was scary was not necessarily Obama but a people stupid enough to elect Obama. And that same hypnotized stupidity is on display again. I hope that the world realizes this is just the crazies on display and a lot of them are being paid to do it. But this is what happens when demoralization is complete. You can get people thinking they are noble for keeping criminals from being deported. A whole society can think it is noble to protect pedophiles, murders, rapists, thieves. Unbelievable if it wasn’t right in front of our eyes to see for ourselves.
