I don't doubt it. I'm just old, so no home rent or mortgage for many years, and those contemporary numbers plain startle me. Best wishes to your boys.
An ugly slacker?
I had all that when I met the current Mrs.
She said she DID NOT want to live in the house I built with the EX. So, we moved.
Happy Wife, Happy Life!
No, it started with free trade and offshoring.
1990: beginning of h-1b visas and offshoring.
The problem with fixer uppers is the seller prices it like it is in perfect condition.
Perhaps if they save money instead of buying $7 coffees
I don’t understand the young people today. I have a 23yo Grandson who is good lo0king , doesn’t drink but has yet to go on a date, and I know he’s not gay. Why the change from yester year.

At least they won't get a divorce and lose everything they own.

It’s safe in mommys basement. No need to deal with the ups and downs of real life.
maybe he’s only attracted to feminine women ... not many around these days ... almost extinct ...
Back in Reagan's America.
People were mostly normal for most part.
Today? Young guys are MAGA and all the young women are AWFUL.
1960s - The US began transitioning from sound money policy; removed silver from US coins, stopped honoring silver certificates - replaced them with Federal Reserve Notes.
1970s - The US (and the world) formally went off the Gold Standard. The world experienced the Petrodollar oil shocks.
1990s and beyond - The worldwide fiat money central bank deficit spending era was in full swing; Central banks yo-yoed inflation and interest rates up and down to suit gov’ts and the Rich. Western economies imported the indigent to bolster their failing voter ranks.
Young people (& homebuyers) suffered greatly, and still suffer, from all these excesses.
Don’t forget the GI bill helped push up home ownership.

I bet it is that way out in Murica. Not here in Minneapolistan. I really wish I could live in Murica.
But the decline slowed considerably from 1980 - 1990. Who was POTUS during much of the time period? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
Yep. Reagan’s supply-side economy and he did what he could to slash onerous regulations on business and industry. Although, too many industries wanted the cheap non-US citizen labor.
Since the birth control pill became “safe and effective” in 1968 the percentage of “married” at age 30, or any age, has declined.
Pre Birth Control DELAYED GRATIFICATION dominated over IMMEDICATE GRATIFICATION. Post Birth Control pill the 2 have been reversed. IMMEDICATE GRATIFICATION now dominates.
Home Ownership was part of delayed gratification.
We were 29 when we purchased our first house in 1988 for $135,000. The interest rate was ~ 9%, and while that was high by even today’s standards, the 30 year rate in 1981 when Reagan was sworn in was ~ 18%.
$378,109.68 today.
