The Justice Department has opened a civil rights investigation in the shooting death of Alex Pretti, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters on Friday.
"We’re looking at everything that would shed light on what happened that day and in the days and weeks leading up to what happened," Blanche said during a news conference on Friday. "That’s like any investigation that the Department of Justice and the FBI do every day. It means we’re looking at video, talking to witnesses, trying to understand what happened."

the other officers did not know that Pretti had been disarmed
Maybe the officers fighting Pretti for the gun didn't realize the gun was already taken. They heard the "Gun! Gun! Gun!" warning and were desperately trying to find it as Pretti resisted them. Maybe Pretti, also, didn't know the gun was taken. It was a fight over a gun that was no longer in that waistband. The officers thought any second Pretti would have that gun and start torching them.
Turns out the two shooters were Border Patrol and not ICE and both guys are Hispanic (probably from Texas).
