The last time temperatures in Tampa, Florida, reached or dropped below 32°F was on January 13, 2011. During that event, temperatures dropped to 29°F, causing ice to form on the Veterans Expressway. While a significant cold blast occurred in January 2018, the most recent official 32-degree (or lower) reading for the city occurred in 2011. That was fifteen years ago.

Meanwhile, here in the Salt Lake City area we’ve had NO Snow this season. Upper 50’s today and likely no snow the rest of the winter. That’s a first.

Folks, I'm in the middle of the icestorm aftermath in Nashville. It's now one week since I've had power or wired Internet. The generator is a lifesaver, but it can't heat the whole house, so we rely on a woodstove & keep parts of the house very cold. My neighborhood looks like a war zone with all of the downed trees & damaged cars, etc.

Try sleeping in a cold house in a place where temperatures get to the teens at midnight, then we can talk about "misery".

The family has been talking about this since last night. Sister in St. Pete was able to bring her orchids. The cold temps were just an overnight thing there, meanwhile Gainesville folks will get back to low 20’s again tonight. That sister lost some plants that they couldn’t get in fast enough, or didn’t have room for. Had a frozen spigot, but they got it working.

Niece saw snow in Newberry! Fun for her kids!

I appreciate your current disaster predicament. Have spent 10 days in sweltering heat with no electricity, working long hours to clean up the property following hurricanes. Your situation is very similar to what we experienced following back-to-back Hurricanes Helene (salt water flooded home) and Milton (lost all trees) in 2024. Still rebuilding from that today. Eight vulnerable, tender saplings needing protection from the cold weather were planted within the past six months to replace trees lost in those storms.

As for this cold snap in Florida, many homes here do not have central heating. Space heaters and electric blankets are the rule for many residents during cold weather.

I'm only on day #2 without wired internet, trying to run a business. But I did move the tender tropical plants that I could, and covered those that I couldn't, to protect them from the freezing weather. Running the pool pump all night to avoid ruptured pipes.

I pray that you stay strong and get your power back up and running very soon.

Can you run an electric blanket off that generator?
