Ami Arifi, 30, Gezhim Xhafa, 29, and Sohqib Shakibi, 25, allegedly raped the 28-year-old local woman over a two hour period in their hotel room in Split on the morning of July 22 last year.
They are facing up to ten years in a Croatian prison after they were charged by the Split County State Attorney’s Office on Wednesday.

According to the Pacific Legal Foundation, several San Francisco residents and Californians for Equal Rights Foundation sued San Francisco Thursday, challenging an ordinance that establishes a fund for Black residents.
The lawsuit alleges that the ordinance is discriminating on the basis of race because it allows taxpayer money to be funneled into the fund. The plaintiffs said a win would protect taxpayers from supporting a government-based racially motivated program and establish boundaries for other cities implementing similar policies.

In January, state Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Pearlman, who sided with Democratic lawyers who argued that the boundaries of her 11th Congressional District unlawfully diluted the voices of Black and Latino voters in Staten Island.
The judge ordered New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw the district boundaries and blocked elections until the new lines are finalized.
But New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox, who joined with Malliotakis in petitioning the Supreme Court to take up the case, said the judge’s ruling was “flawed” and will “result in extreme disruption of the election process” if allowed to stand.
“The nakedly partisan decision by Justice Pearlman would impose a racial gerrymander, contrary to U.S. Supreme Court precedent,” he said in a statement. The case was brought by extreme Democratic partisans and is an insult to the voters of NY-11.

The governor’s ability to act unilaterally during states of emergency would be limited, if a new California bill becomes law.
Assembly Bill 1835, introduced by Assemblymember James Gallagher, R-Chico, would limit a state of emergency that a governor can declare to 90 days, unless the Legislature votes to extend it.
“There’s definitely times during an emergency when a governor, an executive, needs to act to protect life and property,” Gallagher told The Center Square in an exclusive interview this week. “However, there also needs to be some checks and balances on that.”
Gallagher aims to do what he said is a similar process in local governments throughout the state, as well as the legislatures of other states.
“That gives the ability to the Legislature to review the emergency, what’s going on, and then have some say in whether those emergency powers continue,” Gallagher said. “We think it’s a good reform.”
The bill was born out of a response to the state of emergency in California during the COVID-19, pandemic, when Gov. Gavin Newsom, then in his early tenure as governor, declared a state of emergency in the state that lasted for years. Colorado saw a record-high 107 human trafficking counts in 2023 and 88 in 2024, according to FBI data. CSI said the state ranked 13th in the nation in 2024 for highest number of trafficking cases.
CBI’s preliminary data shows 110 human trafficking crimes took place last year, but that number could change.
“CBI’s data for 2025, however, is incomplete, as there is a 30-day data entry lag for previous months,” CSI said in its analysis. “As figures are finalized, the 2025 count may remain at 110 or climb higher.”
CSI also noted there is typically a slight variation between the FBI and CBI in their total counts of human trafficking crimes.
According to CSI criminal justice fellow Mitch Morrissey, a former Denver district attorney, one reason for the increase is law enforcement is “better at recognizing situations that are human trafficking and not domestic violence or some other crime.”

Senator Saddam claims that Virginia is in the middle of an ‘Islamophobia’ crisis. The second Muslim selected for the state senate, after Ghazala Hashmi, who is now acting as Virginia’s Lt. Governor, the Bangladeshi immigrant, from a country where non-Muslims are being murdered in the streets, has made complaining about ‘Islamophobia’ in his new home his signature issue.
Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim’s first priority has been a bill to define ‘Islamophobia’. The most notable thing about his bill SB 624 ‘Assault and battery; definition of “Islamophobia”, penalty’ is how completely unnecessary it is. Virginia already has multiple layers of hate crimes enhancements for assaults motivated by race, ethnicity and religion. During Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s term, the legislature has already passed SB 7 (Senate Bill 7) and its counterpart enhancing the assault charge for anyone who “intentionally selects the person against whom a simple assault is committed because of his race, religious conviction, gender, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, color, or ethnic or national origin.”
That should cover Islam and Muslims. And yet Sen. Saddam introduced a 3 page bill with 10 clauses in its first section a whole lot of whom do nothing more than add (including Islam) where it isn’t remotely needed or useful. For example “because of his race, religious conviction (including Islam), gender, disability, gender identity” or “because of his race, religious conviction (including Islam)”. Islam appears to be the only religion being singled out this way.
Why provide Islam with this privileged status? Because it makes Islam distinct, which is a step towards making it superior, and making Islam distinct and superior is the religious mission of all believing Muslims.
This isn’t about making sure that attacks on Muslims are prosecuted, but about providing Islam with special privileges.
