Is it successful in the sense of advancing and spreading conservative though? Or is it simply successful in that they meet a quarterly goal? Is the site engagement improving or falling? Is the demographic of the site getting younger or older? Is it, and I'm going to quote JimRob here, "... to champion causes which further conservatism in America."
Unless you have insider info I'm not really sure how you can say, "This is a successful business model." when judged against the stated goals as laid out so many years ago.

The primary goal of FR has been to meet the FReepathon goals each quarter. Which they do.
If the goal was to grow traffic, increase active members and advance and spread conservative thought, then that goal would be an abject failure.
Just as the FReepathon has been in place for over 25 years; so has the 20th century technology that JR originated back in the late 90's.
Will Chris and John make changes to bring this site into the 21st Century? I doubt it. Too many old timers like the way its always been.

Considering that there are certain spammers, that are allowed to continue spamming and degrading FR, chasing many FReepers off...
I’ll leave it at that.
