Well, that’s certainly a broad brush generalization.

Google says that 60% of the human race lives in Asia.

Besides, I don’t trust the Economist. It’s a Fake News outland and home to editors who hate President Trump.

Any story it publishes is suspect in my humble opinion.

I guess the exception to that broad statement would be Tokyo. It has plenty of evidence of valuing life beyond material things. It’s true many people work hard, but they also visit temples, learn crafts, play sports, dance, even go to cat cafes. And it is pretty clean.
