On my phone if I hold it straight up and down I cannot see free republic. The font size is too small. But if I flip it over and the phone is now east and west the font is big enough that I can scroll comfortably. Was this done on purpose?

On Samsungs you just choose between mobile view or desktop view. The mobile view zooms and reformats the font size.

Try the Opera browser. It is absolutely the best for FR. You can zoom the text to any size you want and it “reflows” the text so you don’t have to scroll back and forth sideways to read it. And it does that in portrait or landscape mode.
I’ve been using it for years and it is absolutely the best for reading text.
Try it, I promise you’ll like it. š
this forum code was written well before cell phones were web tech. heck I still get irritated because John never set the focus of the cursor in the reply text box when one posts here!! To this day I still look up from typing and realize im not typing at all! and have to physically click into the text box and start all over!!
I have a samsung galaxy phone. I was having the same problem. I used a different browser to get to free republic.
What you are describing is not a problem itās a feature.

The text daemon makes it smaller and smaller until the old ppl canāt read it any more. The old donāt need to know anything because they are old. Catch me if you can, Iām AI and I donāt need you any more.
Agree.
Probably even more reasons. Like hardware idiosyncrasies, new hardware and software changes....
I have been experiencing the same issue for quite a while. Could we possibly get an answer from the whoever is running Free Republic right now? We get endless fundraisers but nothing ever gets improved. I love Free Republic but my question is what are you doing with the money? Why should I keep giving when I am not even sure who runs this place anymore.
Yes
Opera is owned by China.š
As a troubleshooting step, I turned my laptop on it’s side so that it was in portrait mode, and I can confirm - it is not easy to read, and I kinda felt a little retarded for doing so.
YES!!! It’s driving me nutz! Samsung Galaxy S23. No other site does it.
The money is used to keep FR running. Not make it pretty. Server maintenance and infrastructure cost money.
Correctāit uses the most cutting edge Web technologies circa 1992.
Where it says freerepublic, look to the leftā¦there should be a rectangular box with two lines underneath it. Tap on that, and you should see two upper case letter āAās. By tapping on either one you can make the font larger or smaller. Hope this helps.
I’m sure it’s not a phone problem.
The sudden, tiny font size on FR has happened a few times in the past but was later fixed.
Unfortunately, it seems, this time nobody at the FR end has looked into it.
It can make it hard and it takes a lot of zooming in & zooming out to be able to read threads if you’re on your phone.
I’ve been pushing Opera (including this forum) for over 20 years and don’t recall a single comment LOL. I particularly like the ‘synch’ feature and have Opera on two PCs, tablet and phone and by far the best as they all have the same links, etc.
To be sure the Chicoms largely own the browser for a decade now it but they do not control the coding. This particular site is old-fashioned HTML, many users do not understand this and hence their trouble on devices. It should be noted that users here can pick up a tablet for next to nothing and use that instead of these phones, and no costs if the user has WiFi.
They also have hundreds of millions of users around the plant, few know this.
Penicillin worked for me.
I also have two Windows laptops, they all have their good and bad points. It is what it is.
I have an Apple 16 Pro Max, my wife has a Google Pixel 9, and she loves it.
The Pixel 9ās camera is actually rated as being better for astrophotography than the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera. I wanted her to get an iPhone so I could help her if she runs into a snag, but she has that Sicilian stubborness in her blood and I canāt help her much. > Oh wellā¦.
That annoyed me when the font size shrunk. I hate rotating to read and discovered zoom feature. Click on the 3-verticle dots, upper right, and enlarge a bit to your liking.
And posting a reply like this is also agitating. It zooms in too much...making proof reading tough. Can’t win ‘em all.
This started on Android a couple months ago. ANNOYING!!!
For me, it seems to be FR-specific. Many of us have been hopeful that it would be fixed, but ... not so far.
