Sorry, I don’t want a 51st state, anywhere. A US territory I could see. Then give them time to demonstrate that they would make patriotic citizens.
I bet Albertans would be better U.S. Citizens than most of the states on the west coast, New England, New Mexico, and certain Rocky Mountain States. Make one of them a territory and give Alberta statehood instead.
MileHi if i remember my grade school history class correctly, I think the new area would first become a territory that would elect representatives that write a state charter that gets voted on by the people.
After that’s completed, I believe there is a period of time that is established in our federal laws regarding a census of the population and a designated time period that must pass before the new territory can petition the Federal government to request statehood.
After that’s occurs, I think there is a vote by the people in the state on whether to become a state or remain a territory and if they vote for statehood, I believe it still needs to be ratified officially by Congress and signed by the President of the United States also.
But don’t hold me to all of that it’s late and I just don’t have it in me to look this up right now. I just remember there’s a hell of a lot more steps in there before someone can become a State.
I’ll Look it up tomorrow.
