Frey actually failed to get the DFL (Democrats in Minnesota are known as the Democratic Farmer Labor Party…think hammer and sickle like the Communists) endorsement for mayor with a Somali Communist being endorsed instead. This was a huge problem so party bosses claimed the endorsement was not procedurally correct and Frey was eventually endorsed.
