I recall watching the ‘peaceful assemblies’ protesting ‘Nam from the rooftop of my boarding house on the hill one night. The Nat’l Guard was launching white flares to light up the crowds and tear gas to disperse them. Rumors were things like ‘Berkeley just took the Bay Bridge’ and stuff about Madison.
