So every time the electricity goes out people will lose heat in their house?

Considering your home's gas heater still needs electricity to run the blower, most have an electric igniter, thermostat/control board, etc., you lose your heat when the electricity goes out unless you're manually burning wood...

I can hook up a generator to run those things. I cannot hook up a generator to heat the house.

At least in my area, there’s a separate line of electricity provided by the gas utility that keeps going even if power to the rest of the house is knocked out. It’s a nice bit of foresight on their part.
