No one can own an “assault”: weapon, legal shotguns and sporting guns must be disassembled and under secure lockdown and most Aussies aren’t willing to go through the government hassle of owning a firearm. Even the police by US standards are not well armed nor particularly well trained as evidenced from the tepid police response to the shootings.
