Obama was in the right place at the right time. 2008 was the start of a financial crisis where the Republicans were blamed. He could have beaten anyone.

He also faced two pretty weak candidates, McCain and Willard. Interestingly, Obama’s re-election was the first one in modern history where his margin of victory was SMALLER than his initial election.

Not only that, America was ready to turn the page on our history.

Obama represented that potential and promise.

It turned out that he was a Marxist.

We didn't sign up for that.

I agree, but in a different way.

Obama vanquished Hillary. That counted for a LOT in many people’s eyes.

I suspect many people were turned off by Palin, though that was due to SNL and other provocateurs and spin doctors.

Finally, Obama didn’t seem like a full-on radical leftist. He campaigned as the change agent. For people who cherished America, and to a certain extent who had guilt on their conscience, voting for Obama could cleanse their soul.

Pour all that into the blender, and you get a massive victory.
