I know what you mean. I was trying to read the newspaper when I was four and when I saw a word I did not understand I’d ask my folks what it meant. So in the first grade I could already read very well and write some too.

Downside is you become teacher’s pet and the other kids treat you like a Martian so you have to be extra nice to them.

My nickname in our neighborhood was “Dictionary.” I don’t know what I did to earn it.

My dad read to us a lot. Mostly Childcraft books and Dr. Seuss. The Chuldcraft books had wonderful stories, nursery rhymes, tales of valor, poetry, nature stories, and overviews of cultures. All arranged from volume 1 for youngest readers to volumes for older readers. I still have them and I treasure them.
