Same.

I was a teenager when my boyfriend’s parents took us to see Close Encounters at the theater and it was so cool to see a whole theater full of people step out into the night and look up at the sky with silent, mixed wonder and anxiety.

Didn’t get any crowd reaction like that when we were taken to see Star Wars.

Star Wars was okay but not remotely life altering.

My movie power-experience was JAWS at the walk-in theater 1975, Kingsport, TN. I walked out onto the sidewalk still in a bit of a daze. Probably Spielberg’s most powerful movie.

Beautiful comment there, Salamander.  You remind me of once training with the 12th Marine artillery battalion at the foot of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the Big Island.

Mauna Kea is famous for its clear skies, which is why there are several international astronomic observatories atop that mountain.

But even much farther down the slope, the view of the night sky there is spectacular.  It was utterly pitch black all around us, except for the bright constellations above.  Laying on the ground and looking up, in the space of just a few minutes you'd see a dozen meteors streak across, burning up in splendor as they hit the Earth's atmosphere.
