Why socialism resonates with Gen Z and Millennials across the US
Money Control ^ | Sep 28, 2025

For many young Americans, the 2008 financial crisis was more than a downturn; it was a defining life event. Families lost homes to predatory mortgages, jobs vanished overnight, and college graduates faced bleak opportunities. For organizers like Gabe Tobias, watching low-income immigrant families lose everything to adjustable-rate mortgages was transformative. The crisis convinced many that capitalism itself was stacked against working people, a belief that would later fuel their political activism, the Wall Street Journal reported…

Polling shows that socialism resonates strongly with younger Americans. A YouGov survey this year found 62% of people aged 18 to 29 held a favourable view of socialism—an unimaginable figure during the Cold War. For many, the ideology is less about Marxist theory and more about housing, healthcare, and wages. As tenants’ rights organizer Genevieve Rand put it, “Why should I care about saving democracy if it can’t provide me a home or food I can afford?” This practical framing has broadened socialism’s appeal and pulled it into the political mainstream.

Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary for New York mayor in June, represents the culmination of nearly two decades of grassroots work. His charisma, use of social media, and ability to mobilize immigrant communities mattered—but so did the seasoned network of organizers forged through crises, campaigns, and movements since 2008. His victory signals that socialist politics is not only viable in America’s biggest city but potentially ascendant.

…Groups like the DSA Fund are now focused on governance, not just winning campaigns. The goal, they argue, is to turn electoral victories into durable policies on rent control, healthcare, and climate. For Tobias and others, Mamdani’s rise is “just step one” in a longer fight that began with the trauma of 2008 and continues to shape America’s political future…

As those two age groups die off, American voters will move steadily to the Political Left.

Not true.

Re: "Not true"

I disagree.

- NEP Poll - 2024

All Hispanic Voters

Kamala - 51%

Trump - 46%

All White Voters

Kamala - 42%

Trump - 57%

When white USA voters die, every other ethnic group majority supports the Democrats.

When white USA voters die, every other ethnic group majority supports the Democrats.

Texas is 40% Hispanic and Florida is 26% Hispanic.

For Texas, exit‑poll data analyzed by the Texas Politics Project shows 55% of Latino voters backed Trump.

For Florida, the Instituto Cervantes study (analyzing NEP and UnidosUS polls) reports 58% Trump vs. 42% Harris.

The Florida Hispanic majority is 1960 Castro Cuban.

A huge majority of the 1960 Cubans, and their children and grand children, are still concentrated in south Florida.

A majority of them trace their ancestors to Europe - not Cuba.

I do not know enough about Texas to comment. I will have to research your 55% Latino number and comment later.

I do know the Hispanic vote in California, New Mexico, and metro New York City is heavily Democrat, which is obvious from the 2024 NEP national poll.

Oregon is roughly 71% White, while Massachusetts is about 68%. Vermont and Maine are the whitest states in the country, at about 90% each. Washington State is around 65% White, and Minnesota stands out in the Upper Midwest at about 82%. These figures reflect the broad demographic patterns across the northern U.S., with New England and parts of the Midwest remaining the most heavily White by percentage.

According to the argument that you're making, they should be reliable Republican states. Yet they all voted for Harris in 2024.

Globalism , Free Trade, legal immigration, worker replacement have all but killed capitalism.

Actually, those things helped make our 1% class super rich, much richer as a percentage of the nation’s wealth than ever before. Capitalism worked great, for them.

What has failed, is the theory of trickle down economics. Companies with billions of dollars in pure profit per quarter, laying off tens of thousands of people at the same time.

All so the billionaire class, no longer hiding the shadows, can flaunt their arrogance and excessive lifestyles in front of us. People are sick of it. Even people with jobs can no longer afford simple vacations.

I’m certainly no fan of socialism, as we’ll end up with the same greedy bastards in charge of it, and it will ultimately be even worse for the average guy. But people are fed up with these guys at the top now, as it’s become clear they don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves.

They see the same TikTok videos of Shaniqua with her EBT haul and think, "I'd like to eat steak too."

That’s a big part of it. The other part is no matter how hard they work, their company may lay them off anyway, even when the company has billion dollars profits. So they’re not only jealous of the EBT class, they see their employer as an antagonist, rather than a blessing.

They just don’t see a lot if motivation to work hard anymore, for someone else, and starting your own business is harder than ever, as the system is designed to crush you and reward the giants. The pandemic was when things really started to flip.

So you don’t blame Globalism? You missed the whole point.

I clearly blamed globalism, but was specific in how it was to blame, in that it allowed the billionaire elites to fatten themselves at the expense of the working glass.

Globalism, in itself, does not happen in a vacuum. It is the result of actions be being taken, by some, who have the ability to make it happen, or not. The American consumer bears some responsibility for purchasing foreign goods, over domestic ones, the most obviously damaging one being the purchase of foreign cars, which is one of the largest purchases most people make.

But by far the greatest blame for globalism goes to those at the top, who own or run our biggest companies. They all got filthy rich off it, so for them it was a great thing, that they made happen, on purpose.

And taxing the working class, via tariffs, is not going to proved successful in curbing it, either. That will only further hurt the middle class, who is already revolting over how they have raised the cost of everything, and the tariffs are already being reduced. Tariffs are simply a tax, and could be effective in stopping globalism if they were specifically focused on globalist company profits, instead of the working man, but that’s not about to happen.

I came across a post-war speech by Oswald Mosley, of all people.

Sadly, by casting his lot with Hitler, he pretty much blew his credibility, but damn he was a good orator. And he nailed it about Globalism here.

Being more specific about how tariffs aren’t really hurting the big companies, only the small ones, is due to the diversity in foreign factories that the big companies own, and can leverage.

For example, when large tariffs are placed on only one country, like China, these multinational corps can in many instances shrug it off, by simply slushing money around from other product lines built outside China, while they simply just move their manufacturing to another one of their countries they utilize besides America.

Until you start targeting these multinational companies, for manufacturing in ANY country besides America, they’ll just keep moving their manufacturing around, like a shell game. That can be done with tariffs, but it must be tariffs for ANY foreign investment, to actually force them to repatriate.

Great video. It really helps explain why this younger generation is flirting with socialist utopian dreams, as the whole world is now turning into a Chinese sweatshop, except for the ruling class., who is only getting wealthier

I spent my entire adult life believing in trickle down economics, and maybe that did work in our more moralistic past, but in today’s society when sinful nature is not only accepted but in many cases glorified, the lesson seems to be take all you can get, for yourself, even if by hook or crook, and to hell with your fellow man.

Those with the power to change the rules, will certainly do so, in their favor. One of the greatest examples we have before us, is how several in the highest levels of our government, are now wanting to be paid huge sums of money ($230M in the case of the President, $500K for each Senator) directly to them, by the government, using levers of power they control.

So from the younger generations perspective, with slave labor staring them in the face, and what appears to be rampant abuse of the system by those in control, it’s easy to see why they are looking for a change. Socialism will only speed their demise into communism, of course, but they do at least appear to grasp the current downward trajectory we are currently on. Hopefully that energy for change will help usher in a new wave of more trustworthy politicians, who believe in capitalism, but with a focus on common Americans as a whole, and not just how they personally benefit from it. Maybe that’s a pipe dream, but minus that, it appears the next generation will be willing to give socialism a chance, unfortunately.

Sorry but the baseline tariff prevent country shopping for the cheapest wages. Sorry globalist you’ll have to try again to sellout American workers.

Ok raise the tariff and reduce income taxes. Oh and the consumer is not at fault global eagle. It’s not like we voted on selling out or importing goods. We had no choice.

It’s better to have a job and pay $1000 for a tv then to have no job and no money to buy the same tv that is priced at $800.
