So, did that time not really take place in the real world, or has the real world changed by due to its turning away from the firm belief in a creator & Lord?

I think that there was a brief period of time maybe the early part of the 20th Century where news reporting was more idealistic. Perhaps as a reaction to the Yellow Journalism period of 19th Century.

But in reality my read of the history journalism is that sensationalism in news has always been more of the general rule.

It is simply economics. Sensationalism (if it bleeds it leads) sells.
