The Chevelle SS is out of contention for the "best" muscle car between 1964 and 1972 for two reasons: no cool song about it, and no prominence in a cool movie back then.

It doesn't help that Chevy also offered the Camaro SS, the Impala SS, and the Corvette.

Had one I modified to run low 13’s. Too slow. Bought a ‘69 SS 396 Camaro, dropped in a LS6 454 and ran mid 11’s with 9” slicks, 4:56 gears. This is my candidate!

I had a '62 4-door Impala, 283, 2-speed power-slide transmission.

Low 25s. 🤡

The Chevelle SS was a sweet machine, but the fastest ride I ever had was 140 MPH in a ‘69 Roadrunner with the 383CID and 3 2-barrel carbs. One scary automobile!

I had a 1970 Dodge Super Bee, it was damn fast…

I can still remember some of the goodies installed;

Edelbrock high rise intake manifold

Holley carburetors

Iskenderian camshaft

Triple valve springs (shaved heads)

Hooker headers

Lakewood ladder traction bars

Muncie stone-crusher transmission

Hurst shifter

There’s more, but it’s been so long now…

Full sized vehicle that would pin you into the seat when you put your foot down.

Greenies ruined the fun, they’re still at it, never liked them, still don’t….

My dad bought a new Eldorado in 1970. 500ci and 425hp sitting on top of that front wheel drive.

Red light to red light it held it’s own against them all.

No mention of the 1966-67 GTO or the Shelby Mustang KR 500 or the Yenko Camaro. Not worth the paper it wasn’t written on.

I can't believe they forgot the Yugo. It took all the muscle you had to push it to the repair shop.

Seriously, the Boss 302 Mustang gets my vote. Looked fast even sitting still.

Well, hell, if we can start changing parts I can tell you about some pro stock cars. I thought we were tacking production cars.

I liked 1963 Corvette, 1965 Mustang, 1967 Camaro. In college, I drove a 1968 Buick Wildcat. 450 engine. Two doors, power everything. I got it buy working 7 days a week all summer roofing, caddying, painting houses after roofing.

Didn’t Rodney King get a Yugo up to 110? Of course, it was after 1972.

The 375 hp fuel injected ‘64Corvette would likely be the answer in 1964, but not if you included later years. Mine would do 70 mph in low, and much more in the next three gears.

I had a ‘73 Ford LTD with a 429 cubic inch motor. It was a ticket hazard, as you could easily go 100 mph and it felt like 30. However, it was also a slurper.

Earlier this year, when my car was being repaired, I drove a ‘23 Dodge Charger with a 300 horsepower motor—best car I ever drove.
