Nobody seems to have begun a Thanksgiving food/cooking thread, so I thought I would.
I've never eaten okra, but have always wanted to try. This time of year, I can probably only get frozen here; does anyone have a recipe they like for frozen okra?
Super simple is to boil it in salty water for a few minutes, then rinse in a colander to reduce the slime. Maybe put a pat of butter on it and some black pepper. Once you’ve got a taste for okra, it’s hard to do it wrong.
If you dont drop your childhood taste buds, you
might be missing out on something you’ll enjoy later.
True.
Maybe buy two cans, and remove the fibrous leaves to use only the tender ones...
I’m from Mobile,Al and I don’t eat that slimey plant. LOL
But if you do, fried cuts down on the slime factor
Thanks. Maybe I should wait for the season when they’re fresh. The battered and deep-fried recipes look good.
You’ve never had it in gumbo?
Some people put okra in gumbo. I don’t
Some people put file’ in gumbo. I don’t
Many ways to make it.
It’s all about what you like.
I like lots of shrimp, crab, oysters and Conecuh sausage. Yum!

Their New Year Soup looks good.
My Granny always had black eyed peas on New Year’s Day.
I’ve never had black eyed peas. Once in a while, mother would burn the beans, and black eyed peas look like burned beans. Maybe this year...
They’re good. We often just buy the canned ones and heat them up, but if you want to get fancier, this is a really nice recipe that I’ve made for years:

I still make ham with black eyed peas and rice, and collard greens! A New Year’s Tradition still going strong! ;)
My husband is a Yankee, and for him it has to be roast pork and sauerkraut. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten him to eat a black eyed pea.
My husband is a Yankee, too, and I’ve converted him into a Southern Gentleman! He even likes boiled peanuts! ;)
Although roast pork with sauerkraut is a FINE meal! :)
LOL
I’m not a fan of sauerkraut, but I especially like the carrots that he uses to nest the pork. Those always come out wonderfully roasted.
Thankyou for starting this...one of the most enjoyable threads....
I’m glad you like it. I’d forgotten how fun it is to do, and may have to continue.
When I make roast pork and sauerkraut, I make steamed dumplings the way my Grandma and Mama did, with homemade pork gravy drenching them! Good eating!
Stuffed ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, boiled onions, stuffing, apple pie, pumpkin pie, beer and football.
