—Participants taking melatonin were nearly 3.5 times as likely to be hospitalized for heart failure when compared to those not taking melatonin (19.0% vs. 6.6%, respectively).
—Participants in the melatonin group were nearly twice as likely to die from any cause than those in the non-melatonin group (7.8% vs. 4.3%, respectively) over the five-year period.
I have taken melatonin for most of a year, several years back.
I wonder what awaits.
Rest assured, this is a correlation study.
One has to ask, why are they having trouble sleeping and feel the need to take melatonin?
Therein lies the root cause, not the melatonin.

I took melatonin a few times in the 90’s, but I decided to stop. The reason being is that it is a hormone, and I realized scientists still do not know enough about hormones to tell us what is safe and what is known. The only hormone I try to condone is Vitamin D - because some of us can’t get enough otherwise. Ideally, we could get enough from sun and food.
I’ve been taking it since 2023. I’ve been trying to wean myself off of it and now I’m down to just 3MG at night, down from 12 MG.
How much melatonin does one have take to trigger these adverse effects?

I periodically take melatonin or tea that has melatonin. I will throw every into the garbage now.
I went to the link and could find nothing about when this study was conducted, the number of people in the two groups, or any link to the original study. Am I wrong?
So happy to know this study can single out the cause of heart failure, especially after you may be on multiple other prescriptions or have been quadruple Jabbed if this study occurred after Dec2020. Studying people who were prescribed melatonin by their doctor vs OTC supplements without doctor involvement is another question.

Correlation or causation?
A very unhelpful article. “People who had been using melatonin for at least a year”. At what frequency? Daily? Occasional? Every 6 months? And at what dosage?
This was clearly written to scare people who take or are considering taking melatonin.

At what MG dose? Goes from 1mg to 10mg per pill.
Yikes I’ve been taking higher than average doses of it just about every night for probably over a decade.
I have been taking Melatonin for several years. I asked my cardiologist about it before I started, and he has no problems with it.
“Relaxium Sleep Aid contains melatonin. It is a key ingredient in the supplement, along with other sleep-promoting substances such as magnesium, ashwagandha, and tryptophan.”
And I trusted Mike Huckabee and Bill O’Reilly. /S
Wow, not good. My doc recommended melatonin many years ago to help with sleep. I was taking 5 mg highly for quite a few years but, after using it a long while, I think it actually contributed to poorer sleep quality and stopped it maybe 6 to 12 months ago. I think my sleep quality (such as it is) improved after discontinuing it.
I wonder if the damage is permanent.
I have no idea now many years I took it.

Usually the dose makes the poison.
