I recall the 442 did not equate to engine size, but a 4 bbl carb, 4 speed trans and posi-traction.

In that era my brother had a vehicle with 4 on the floor and a fifth under the seat.

The Olds "4-4-2" (later the "442") initially referred to the four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts but when the 3-speed manual and 2-speed automatics were added in 1965, the brochures referred to the 400 cubic inch engine, four-barrel carburetor, and dual exhausts.
