I don’t understand taking the “explody thing” all the way up to the 4th floor, making the escapade much more dangerous by stretching out the getaway time.

When i was still in high school, one day i was sitting in class when all of the sudden an explosion occured in the hallway right outside my classroom. As it turned out, as a prank, some kid set off an M-80 firecracker (i think its a quarter stick of dynamite) and ran for the exits.
In those days most school buildings, including mine, had no security cameras anywhere in the building. The technology existed, but schools had as of yet to make use of it. So there was no video of who did it. Still, it didnt take long for the school to find out who was the culprit.
In his haste to make his escape after lighting the fuse, he forgot to take his bookbag with him. I do not know how they punished him.
