As a temporary, stop-gap measure, a good food choice for very poor people to buy and eat are those little plastic bags of dry beans (pinto beans, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, great northern beans, navy beans, black beans, etc.), which you can get at Walmart, Amazon, or pretty much everywhere.

They only cost about a buck something, and are very nutritious, and each bag lasts for many meals.   There are zillions of recipes for making beans in different ways (including using them in soups, stews, salads, or with various sauces, etc.), so meals centered on them can be quite varied.

It might be helpful for very poor people to stock up on various types of those dry beans, while waiting for their benefits to resume.

(Of course, they may need to stock up on some Gas-X too!)

Thank you for your thoughtful idea. I have been urging her for a while to use more beans, as they contain a lot of protein. And then I’d have to get her some recipes for them, too.
