Jets legend Nick Mangold died on Saturday night from complications of kidney disease just two weeks after he publicly revealed he needed a kidney transplant.

Mangold was 41 years old. On Oct. 14, Mangold announced that he had been diagnosed in 2006 with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease. He said he had a “rough summer” and was undergoing dialysis while seeking a kidney transplant.

Mangold, who played center, was a first-round pick by the Jets in 2006. He went on to be one of the key pieces in a team that went to the playoffs three times and made it to two AFC Championship Games. He was a two-time first-team All-Pro selection and seven-time Pro Bowler.

“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Jets chairman Woody Johnson said. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

“I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time,” Mangold said in a statement.

One of the downsides of a sport that requires a huge amount of muscle is that you get used to a diet that supports it. When you retire, the drastic cuts in calorie intake required to stay healthy when you're not working out to exhaustion regularly can result in ulcers. Many can't make the transition, so blimp out big time.

Was he vaccinated? Did the NFL require it when he was playing?

Please, just SHUT UP. People like you are really good at showing your ignorance. Read the article. He had chronic kidney disease. It was diagnosed 20 years ago. Show some respect and quit yapping about the vaccine.

Holy crap! He retired in 2018! I had no idea Covid began that soon. Obviously you’re an Einstein. Wow! I can’t believe you wrote that post. Unbelievable.

My Dad died from complications of Chronic Kidney Disease. He was on dialysis at the end. Not something I’d wish on my worst enemy.

I didn’t know when he played. I’ve never heard of this “great” which is why I asked.

Steroids are very tough on the kidneys. Many pro bodybuilders needed kidney transplants.

Looking at pics from Mangold’s later playing days, he was already pretty “big”. Still, the transition can be difficult for some...

“I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time,” Mangold said in a statement.

As happens to many. Not that that makes it any easier. :-(

I hope he was right with God, and may he rest in peace. He seems to have been regarded as a really quality guy by all. Prayers for his family too!
