One of the downsides of a sport that requires a huge amount of muscle is that you get used to a diet that supports it. When you retire, the drastic cuts in calorie intake required to stay healthy when you're not working out to exhaustion regularly can result in ulcers. Many can't make the transition, so blimp out big time.

My Dad died from complications of Chronic Kidney Disease. He was on dialysis at the end. Not something I’d wish on my worst enemy.

Steroids are very tough on the kidneys. Many pro bodybuilders needed kidney transplants.

“I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time,” Mangold said in a statement. As happens to many. Not that that makes it any easier. :-(
I hope he was right with God, and may he rest in peace. He seems to have been regarded as a really quality guy by all. Prayers for his family too!
