Employees of the SunTrapp, a long-standing LGBTQ bar in downtown Salt Lake City, are entering their third week of a strike over wanting to unionize.
Morgan Sturgill, who is participating in the strike, said the talk of unionizing started over the summer.
“There's been a couple of scenarios where if we had talked about what we wanted before, there was a chance of being demoted, or chance of being let go or just being treated differently afterwards. So it was primarily for that protection,” Sturgill said. “But honestly, the biggest one is policies. A lot of us just want clear guidelines for discipline, a clear employee's handbook.”
Sturgill said earlier this month they had a meeting with the owner.
“About two hours after that meeting, we had all received text messages stating that we had been terminated. Everybody that was in there, in the meeting itself, and anybody that she had thought was associated,” Sturgill explained. "It was resended, so we all ended up going back to work. But it kind of set this precedent for realizing that I think she was going to try and get rid of us from there. After that, we had all started receiving our final write-ups. Most of us had not received any sort of write-up before."
On Oct. 3, they decided to go on strike.

Unions only use someone else’s money. Having looked at the finances of laundromats, small stores, bars and restaurants, I can tell you there’s not enough slop to put up with the extra overhead of union bosses and extra benefits. The way most small businesses work is the family works there for free. This is why so many motels are owned by the Patel group, a clan from India. The labor is free. This is why people who own small successful laundromats and restaurants are successful. They’re run on the family’s free labor. If the bar unionizes it will be out of business shortly.

A sane man realizes when a union claims to protect workers against the company, there is no protection for the workers against the union.
Well for Mormon country, gay (ouch) bar (ouch) union (OUCH) is a trifecta of evil. You wonder if they have secret slot machines too (ouch), or serve coffee (ouch) and drive below the posted speed limit (OUCH OUCH OUCH stop now you’re hurting me).

When I worked in small companies the other employees see anyone who owns a company as “rich.” They have no concept of what it costs to run a company and how many agencies have their hands out or how laws make it less profitable. I’m a landlord. By law, I can’t install any plumbing, put on a roof or do any maintenance beyond a “small repair.” By law I must use a certified, licensed contractor. Every year corporate owned property gets a tax increase while the politicians tell the voters they haven’t raised “their” taxes in years.
