The ruling CDU’s leadership spent this past weekend in Berlin-Grunewald in a strategy meeting to address its approach towards the right-wing populist Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), currently the most popular party in Germany. The party’s current Brandmauer—’firewall’—policy forbids any cooperation with the anti-immigration AfD. Despite the Weidel-led party’s growing support, the CDU, with Chanchellor Friedrich Merz at its helm, reaffirmed the cordon sanitaire stance at the meet.
Calls to reconsider the rigid policy have recently come from former CDU General Secretary Peter Tauber and ex-Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, along with similar exhortations by CDU politicians from eastern states including Thuringia, Saxony, and Brandenburg, where the AfD dominates local politics. Andreas Bühl, CDU parliamentary group leader in Thuringia, stated: “Those who align their politics solely according to who supports them confuse morality with politics.” Many other eastern CDU politicians have also voiced concerns that the firewall limits the party’s ability to engage with a substantial portion of voters.

Leftists are the same everywhere.
The CDU is headed to the same place as the Tories in the UK — political oblivion. And they richly deserve it.
Exactly. The Alternative für Deutschland is not "far right." That is a descriptor being pushed by the European Left, their mantra being "more Europe," meaning greater control. That "alternatives" to the European elite are gaining in public sentiment is no reason for a "cordon sanitaire" -- nice French phrase for rejecting challenges to the elite's control -- shows what the whole of the EU and its "members" are about. Power and control, with Merz being among them, and with German von der Leyen atop the EU itself.
"Leftists are the same everywhere." And these "conservatives" and "moderates" are essentially Leftist. Big government hates being challenged, and voters can be challenging when awaken fro being hoodwinked.
My view is that the European elite have seen what electing President can mean for Leftists here, and are aghast that something similar could happen there.
First the Boehner / Cantor / McConnell Republicans from the late 2000s, then the Tories, now the CDU. Parties who think their job is to “contain” their base get destroyed.
The AfD rejects globohomo.
Suicidal. Germany will not survive as either a German or Christian nation without unity.
Er, not really. The party's leader is a dyke. But they are solid against the Islamic invasion, which is all that matters right now.
HUH? Is there a king in chermunee now? Oh, and no 1st amendment either. Weird huh?
She’s a German lezbo.
Weidel has stated her opposition to discussion of sexuality prior to puberty saying that “I don’t want anyone with their gender idiocy or their early sexualisation classes coming near my children.”[24] She has also expressed her opposition to legalization of same-sex marriage, stating that she supports protection of the “traditional family” while also supporting “other lifestyles”.[24]

I’ll give you the ‘script’.
By March 2029, the next national election....four years of steady financial decline will have occurred, with x-amount of problems with migration still occurring. AfD has around 35-percent of the national vote...enough to win. However, they can’t form up a coalition.
So the CDU-CSU is given the form-situation, and is stuck...having to partner up with the SPD and Greens to reach 50-plus-percent. It’s a highly weakened gov’t and the recession continues through 2033...where the AfD is able to win with around 50-plus-percent (not requiring a coalition).
It’s a rough eight years ahead.
