Trump’s Fresh Tariff Assault Threatens China’s Fragile Economy

For thousands of manufacturers across China, it’s déjà vu—with implications for the country’s fragile economy.

Earlier this year, after President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 145% in April, American customers of Alan Chau’s toy factory in southern China abruptly froze orders, sparking a cash crunch ttohat brought his business to the brink. So it came as a relief when the U.S. and China reached a trade truce weeks later in mid-May, rolling back most of their tariffs on one another—and allowing Chau to resume shipping his products again.

Now, less than six months later, prohibitively high tariffs could be the reality again for Chau and tens of thousands of other factory owners that make China a global manufacturing powerhouse. Trump said Friday that he would impose a 100% additional tariff on all Chinese goods, effective Nov. 1.

“That is literally an embargo,” said Chau. “Who is going to do business with China?”

After months of trade talks in which U.S. officials expressed cautious optimism about a breakthrough, the White House was caught off guard when Beijing in recent days unleashed a barrage of measures, showing off an array of tools in its trade-war arsenal, including tightened export restrictions on rare-earth materials that could hurt U.S. industries and an antitrust probe targeting American chip company Qualcomm.

On Sunday, Beijing blamed Washington for having first introduced new restrictions against China after the latest round of trade talks in September.

“Frequently threatening high tariffs is not the right approach to engaging with China,” Beijing’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

It’s the asian mentality. Save face and show no mercy. There’s a price you have to pay for it if it’s in Nanking, Cambodia or Hiroshima. They’ll respect power.

It is not “Trump’s fresh assault..” on whatever, it is fresh Chicommies’ assault on free trade and desire to dominate the world. Let them FAFO and, in the immortal words of our beloved President, to pay”attention to this matter”.

WSJ propagandists have also been pimping numerous sob stories of the H1B Indian job thieves whose gravy train will be coming to an end.

The US could once build atomic bombs from scratch in four years but can’t dig out and refine mere metals in 2025.

Maybe the Indians should avoid Optional Practical Training.

Was it you who predicted that Chinese manufacturing was going to be his next troll? Somebody did recently.

So now, I suppose we’ll see ten threads a day on this topic.

Oh, goody.

China’s economy is threatened by whoever caused Trump to impose the tariffs. Gee, I think China is threatened by China. China could easily unthreaten itself.

China’s economy is threatened by whoever caused Trump to impose the tariffs.

China's economy was already in a downward trajectory, even before Trump took over. When your economy is based on exports, you rely on those exports continuing...and increasing. Any bumps in the road and it will be felt.

China has a large population, but not a large percentage of middle class that can act as an internal engine. There is one reality I learned from my trips to China since the early 2000s: If the news is good (or great) coming out of China...take it down a notch or two if you want a clearer idea of the real situation. If the news you are hearing is bad...then it really is much worse.

First: Slow uke news.

Now: Slow hindi news.

Now you supposedly care about the US economy while ignoring the fact that the wsj righteously deserves to be shut down & investigated as a propaganda arm of the ccp.

Way to go, myron. Your priorities are so out of whack I doubt that you can find your way to the toilet.

China has cut off buying of US soybeans.

US response, create $1 B or so and give it to farmers.

The article talks about a Chinese toymaker who won’t be able to sell toys. Chinese response, eventually, create $1B in yuan and give it to that guy.

I think its official propaganda for the trade war with China trying to reassure Americans China stinks like the propaganda dissing Russia over the Ukraine War.

Next week you’ll be reading about Xi wearing a diaper.
