Thousands of commuters cross the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge every day, but few realize that beneath its eastern span lies a piece of military history.

The Nimitz House, officially named Quarters 1, is a Classical Revival woodframe rectangular house of 5,886 square feet. Quarters 1 was built as part of the initial wave of building construction that established the Naval Training Station, on what was then known as Goat Island, as an active base between 1900 and 1923. The first barracks and the Commander's Quarters were completed in 1900.

Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during WWII, had full use of Quarters 1 from 1946 and died there in 1966, but his principal residence was in the East Bay.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

This is actually a pretty well done segment by this CBS affiliate. I didn't know about this place. It's a shame its under an overpass.

There probably isn’t a Kimmel House. (Admiral, not Jimmy.)

My grandfather met Admiral Nimitz in Honolulu during the war.
One of these days I want to get around to writing a book based on the daily diaries he kept from 13 years old to 94 years old. His uncle also worked for Ronald Reagan.

Looking forward to hearing that you’ve done it. Don’t let good people be forgotten.

My grandpa served with Nimitz on the AO-2 US Maumee in WWI. Nimitz was a young Lieutenant. They conducted the first underway refuelings for ships underway.
It was a secret that no other navy knew how to do.

I have his records. Grandpa joined at the pier and sailed away with he ship. No boot camp.

My Grandpa also served in the Navy during WW1. All I know is that one of his duties was bugler, and he had a port call somewhere in France. I want to say he served on a destroyer, but don’t know if that is correct.

Quite a few of them actually. You can spot them by the crescent moon cut in the door.

Jimmy, not Admiral Husband.

You can visit Adm. Nimitz’ birthplace on the main street of Fredericksburg, TX. It’s directly across from his grandfather’s hotel (now the Museum of the Pacific War).
