Disclosure by the FBI to Congress answers a long-simmering question but does not reveal what the agents did that day.
The FBI has acknowledged it had 274 plainclothes agents in the massive crowds on Jan. 6, 2021, more than four and a half years after questions were first raised about the level of FBI involvement that day, Blaze News has learned.
A senior congressional source said the number is not necessarily a surprise, since the FBI often embeds countersurveillance personnel at large events.
But given the FBI’s until-now steadfast refusal to disclose the level of its presence at the Capitol, the figure might still be viewed with skepticism in some quarters.
The news comes in the wake of claims by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Inspector General that the FBI had no undercover personnel in the Jan. 6 crowds.
“We found no evidence in the materials we reviewed or the testimony we received showing or suggesting that the FBI had undercover employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on January 6,” the DOJ OIG said in an 88-page report released in December 2024.

Good point. Their large presence is disturbing enough, but perhaps the bigger questions are: what were they directed to do exactly and what kinds of actions were coordinated amongst them? The FBI didn’t just sent that many people there to be observers — they could have done that with just a handful of people. This was a planned operation with a purpose.

That may be technically true. Especially if they go out of their way to not look for evidence and not ask relevant questions to people who know the facts. If you're really serious, you have someone outside the OIG review and filter the documents first before the official OIG review.
There is no way you go from no evidence even suggesting any undercover infiltration to 274 agents (plus an unspecified number of other employees, contractors, confidential informants and other law enforcement or intelligence agencies foreign and domestic) without willful ignorance in the first investigation.
