Are Our Youth Being Intentionally Dumbed Down?
American Thinker ^ | 26 Sep, 2025 | Allan J. Feifer

Much of America’s youth is in free fall, with the only question being why. On every metric, our kids lag behind the world, are abysmally unhappy and unprepared for a life that’s less kind and forgiving than it was fifty years ago. It didn’t happen by accident, and the divided nature of our country means we are unprepared to make necessary changes. Our society tolerates confrontation and excuses, always finding superficial reasons why Johnny can’t read, and why everyone’s so angry. It’s certainly not about money; we spend more per pupil than anyone else.

SNIP

During COVID, roughly 31% of students were chronically absent (missing ≥10% of school days). In 2022-2023, the rate dipped slightly to 28%, but that’s still 75% higher than pre-pandemic levels. In the 2023-2024 academic year, long after COVID’s lockdowns ended, approximately 27.4% of students were still absent.

But that’s just the start of the problem; if Johnny isn’t in school, he can’t learn. But what about when he’s physically in school? What are the underlying dynamics that prevent our young from having a fighting chance to obtain essential skills that are a requirement for living a good life?

It takes three things to take a young person and grow him into a scholar. A scholar must learn to think critically, read, write, and be both emotionally and logically prepared to live in the real world. That young person must eventually (with the help of loving parents) decide which direction to strike out into, whether it be a specific trade or higher skills requiring college or university. Treading water jobs that used to be transitional are now becoming permanent, stymying growth for millions because their schools failed them, and too often, their distracted parents as well.

So you’re argument is there should be no standards.

Isn’t that the case now?

In you're / your argument. (just kidding)

It's not about standards. Compulsory education needs to be done away with.

Works in Japan, China & India! Nine, nine and eight or nine years (I’ve seen two different articles on that for India!) compulsory education in school.

I agree let’s give up and cede the world to them!
We also definitely need to increase our know nothing gimmiedat population.

Some form of compulsory education basically worked here (wasn’t perfect!) until we allowed the Vietnam era pollutants into the system.

Teaching is hard work. Insisting that students actually know the subject is even harder. Having standards and being the 'bad guy' teacher who enforces them is still harder. It;s a lot easier to just pass them on to the next grade, which is what is happening.

Children in an environment of ignorance and laziness are almost impossible to teach.

Our public education system is in total collapse because of the above. Those who want to be educated are going to have to strive, outside the system, to learn.

The affluent will continue with private schools for their children, the others are going to have to find a similar way (scholarships to private schools, vouchers, or home schooling) or join the upcoming massive underclass.

That flawed logic is the argument they use to keep the indoctrination racket going.

As for education in U.S. history, neither of the Wright Brothers graduated high school. The U.S. had such a surge without compulsory education.

Yes, to heartbreaking success. Then we put them in the debt mill of higher ed, where they don’t belong, before setting them out for despair in the larger world.

Or, perhaps, the globalists are a tool of the Left...

One cannot steal, forever. The Left in all countries need safety in numbers, so they fly to Davos, looking for it.

On related news about compulsory education...

ICE just arrested the superintendent of Des Moines, Iowa schools, who is an illegal alien from Africa:

Well, to each, his own. There have been Leftists since before people knew there was a globe.

We could be talking past each other. When I say “Left”, in response to this article, I mean the American Left. These are Communists, who have global appeal.

I don’t know anyone who believes in “one-world-government” that is not run by them.
