MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) — A minivan driver is accused of hitting two German tourists, killing one, when he backed up into them in a crosswalk near Bryant Park on Wednesday afternoon, police said Thursday.
Alexandra Sabine Lewalter Maric, 50, and her husband, 55, were crossing the street when they were struck by a Toyota Sienna near East 40th Street and Fifth Avenue by the New York Public Library at around 2:40 p.m., according to the NYPD.
Investigators said the couple was pinned between the minivan and a box truck after the collision.
The woman was nearly decapitated and died at the scene, police said. The husband was hospitalized in critical condition with head injuries.

Mohammed Abouzaid, 40, of the Bronx, was arrested about five blocks from the scene and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failure to yield to a pedestrian, cops said.
His arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court was pending on Thursday.
The driver has no prior arrests.

The tourists didn't need to go to NY to experience such diversity, they could have gone to Berlin or Hamburg instead.
