US population decline sooner than expected as deaths to outpace births in America by 2031

The US population is approaching a critical demographic milestone as deaths are now projected to exceed births as early as 2031, two years earlier than previously expected. This shift signals a trend toward near-zero population growth, raising concerns about the country's economic future and social support systems.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) updated its population projections in September 2025, attributing the accelerated timing mainly to declining fertility rates and tightened immigration enforcement resulting from the Trump administration’s recent immigration policies. The Trump-era One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with its aggressive immigration crackdown, is projected to reduce immigration flows significantly, further dampening population growth.

According to the CBO, from 2026 to 2029, about 290,000 immigrants are expected to be removed from the country under this new legislation, plus an additional 30,000 departures considered voluntary. This reduction in immigrant families, historically contributing higher birth rates, coupled with a natural decrease in fertility rates, accelerates the timing when deaths surpass births.

Currently, the US population stands around 350 million and was previously expected to grow to 372 million by 2055. These new projections estimate a smaller overall population of 367 million by that year. Moreover, the working-age population is expected to shrink, posing a risk to the labor supply critical for sustained economic growth.

“””Their argument is that science and advanced engineering can keep an endlessly growing supply of new American humans from all over the 3rd world, alive.”””

Yes, if AI is really capable of doing what is being promoted today, then fewer people are needed to keep the economy strong by producing the goods and services needed.

Science and engineering can sustain a population of human farm animals, perhaps billions in America, quality of life and a national identity is not of interest to them.

If Houston was great in 1970 then in their minds it is better today, and the next 20 million will make it even better still.

With the ever-increasing adoption of robotics that may even be accelerated with the advent of AI technology, there will soon be an even greater shortage of good-paying jobs for the existing population. So population decrease is not necessarily a bad thing.

The trouble is, population decrease is deflationary. The species will not be in any immediate danger, but this could be financially catastrophic for a country whose economic model is based on ever-increasing debt/inflation. Who is going to pay back what is owed?

The shot didn’t help. Too many miscarriages.

A long standing theory of economics is that we need population growth in order to have economic growth.

If AI and robotics do what is being touted, then we can have economic growth while population declines.

If AI and robotics in the USA produce better and cheaper widgets than any other country, the declining population is richer.

On the other hand if other countries produce better and cheaper widgets than the USA, we are in big trouble as the titans in those other countries buy the USA land and other assets as they are now doing.

How do you square economic growth with fewer job holders to buy things?

Because if AI and robotics are the real deal, we sell our stuff to every body in the world. The market for stuff produced in the USA is limited to the people who live in the USA.

Our economic system depends on an increasing population. Get rid of Social Security and Medicare. Then we'll be okay with a declining population.

Aiming at Social Security and Medicare are the scare tactics that the tax and debt slavers use to scare their victims.

Even without Social Security and Medicare, our system depends on ever increasing debt. These slavers do not want their investments to decline in value.

correction——

Because if AI and robotics are the real deal, we sell our stuff to every body in the world. The market for stuff produced in the USA is (NOT) limited to the people who live in the USA.

Fair point! It was also GP week, so they could be racing fans. I didn’t ask them if they lived there or were visiting.

LOL!

Or better yet, Jesus will Save Him and make him aware that he is “wearing his sin” for all to see. šŸ™ƒ

“So in 2025 is anybody really better off than 50 years ago”

Tough question.

There are many (both economic and non economic) issues to consider.

—Life expectancy
—Home ownership percentage
—Number of vehicles per adult
—Average commute time for job
—Comparison of median housing costs to median wages
—”Happiness”—presumably measured by asking people
—Average cost to raise a child vs median wages
—Average person’s access to information/knowledge
—Crime rates in community
—Quality of public education

There are both pros and cons here....
