Yep. Robert Newton invented Pirate Talk for his role of Long John Silver, basing it on a Cornish accent.

"Talk like a Pirate" really means "do a really bad imitation of a Dorset or Devon accent". Ever since Robert Newton played Long John Silver in the 1950s Treasure Island film, people seemed to think that all pirates came from the southwest of England, or that the southwest England accent was somehow unique to pirates.

The executives had it pegged. Insane, drunk, and gay is the way Depp played Sparrow.

In reality Pirates come in many different stripes. Somalian pirates I’m sure don’t talk like Robert Newton.

Tells you what a great actor he really was, to have that long lasting effect on society.
Johnny Depp is in that same class, since he’s redefined the ‘Pirate’ genre.

Since you're a fan of Newton, have you seen the late 1940s Carol Reed movie Odd Man Out (nothing to do with pirates, but he's great in it)?
To: ek_hornbeck
Unfortunately no, my wife will not watch any movies in B&W..................

That’s a shame. Some of the greatest ones were in B&W.

Today would be a good day to reread The Pyrates, by George MacDonald Fraser. I recommend that book (well, anything by Fraser) to anyone.

Well, them, watch Olivier’s version of “Henry V” - Newton plays Ancient Pistol in it, in glorious Technicolor.

Newton made two other pirate movies: “Long John Silver” and “Blackbeard the Pirate.” LJS is currently available on Tubi.
It was all three movies that made the Newton’s Devon accent THE pirate accent.
