Tyler Robinson's father realized 'his son was shooter' after seeing family heirloom in media reports

The father of Charlie Kirk's alleged killer realized his son was the shooter after recognizing an unusual rifle shown in media reports of the hunt for the assassin, according to officials.

Matt Robinson allegedly told authorities that he and his wife became alarmed the day after Kirk was murdered in Utah, when they saw images of the suspect and the weapon he used on the news.

The shocked father recognized his own dad's gun in the images released by police, as Tyler Robinson's grandfather had given him the rifle as a gift before he used it to murder Kirk, officials said on Tuesday.

After recognizing the 'unique' gun, Matt Robinson texted his son, asking him for a picture of the family heirloom, which the suspect could not provide, according to police.

In a text exchanged between Tyler Robinson and his partner shared by police, the alleged killer claimed the rifle was the only evidence he left behind.

'If I am able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence. Going to attempt to retrieve it again, hopefully they have moved on,' he allegedly wrote. 'I haven’t seen anything about them finding it.'

Murder weapons are released all the time at the conclusion of proceedings...

I find that surprising, especially in a high profile case.

When I worked in Funeral Service, there was a piece of crap no name bolt action rifle in a closet in the embalming room.

It was used in a suicide over 20 years ago. I have no idea why we still had it.

If he gets the death penalty or life, they will hold the gun as evidence in case he gets the trial overturned on appeal. No way this gun sees the light of day, as long as he is alive.

...after being used by the Utah firing squad.

I would bet that the gun is destroyed. But it may take decades as it will be retained until all appeals end, which could be 2-3 decades. By that time nobody in his family will be around to petition the court.

Wondering if the dad was shocked when his son moved in with that furry male lover?

I think the rifle had a synthetic stock and obviously drilled and tapped for a scope.

That would make it far less desirable than an original in 8mm Mauser.

From ChatGPT:

Very common foreign military Mauser (refurbished/sporterized) in excellent: $600–$1,200

McVeigh pleaded guilty and requested an end to all appeals and a “quick” execution - 4 years. Death row Average is 34 years in Utah.

A friend went to local gun show. A kid 18-24 was walking around carrying an issued WWII pistol belt with leather holster and fabric dual magazine holster with a 1911A1 .45 pistol. Kid said it was his grandfathers and he wanted a shotgun. My friend could have ripped him off, but directed him to a very nice Benneli (sp) autoload shotgun. Gave him the price of the shotgun in exchange for the pistol.
Dumb kid would have been happy with an 870 remington. He had zero firearm knowledge.
My friend is like that, very honest and tries to help young people out.

“ Why decades, they got Tim McVeigh in record time why not this POS!”

McVeigh was convicted in Federal Court and waived further appeals. The feds handle cases much quicker than the states do.

Now that law enforcement has grampy’s rifle, they should use it for the execution firing squad. That would really make grampy proud.

It’s not the gun’s fault.

No. How did he conceal that in a backpack or otherwise. The video of him walking onto the campus before he shot Kirk didn’t show him with anything except a backpack.
