After glancing at the article, I was going to suggest he had some help reeling in the fish. According to this article he fought the fish the whole way to the boat and had plenty of witnesses.

That’s a heck of a haul for anyone. I hooked a 40 pounder here in Alaska-took me almost 30 minutes to haul it up from 400 feet-those rods are built like 1/2-inch rebar for a reason.
