The mother of an autistic 12-year-old boy who was killed by an alligator has been arrested by New Orleans police.
Bryan Vasquez was found dead in a lagoon in New Orleans East on August 26. The cause of death was determined to be an alligator attack and drowning.
The boy's mother, Hilda Vasquez, is facing charges of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and negligent homicide.
Bryan went missing on August 14. At around 3am that day, Hilda was woken up by her son who struggled to sleep at night, according to WDSU.
She took the boy back to his sister's room to go back to bed, and she gave him a melatonin sleep aid.
Hilda said she then woke up at 7am to take her other, six-year-old son to school, leaving Bryan and her 11-year-old daughter home alone.
She did not check on Bryan before leaving because his door was closed and she believed he was still asleep.
When Hilda returned home, she once again did not check on Bryan and instead went straight to her bedroom.
Around 10am, she called her daughter to come to run errands with her. That is when her daughter informed Hilda that Bryan was missing.

He was killed by an alligator but not eaten?
She has to sleep sometime.
It’s not like she fed him to the gatpr. Seems like NOPD may be “stuck on stupid.”
Sing a parent is exhausting
This poor woman must be mentally distraught
Prayers being sent right now…
Gators like alot of animals will kill you and save you as a snack later .
Vasquez was previously convicted of abusing Bryan when he was 3 months old, causing a skull fracture, broken legs and a collapsed lung, according to Gernon. The infant was removed from the home, then the Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services at some point returned him, he said.
Just aaargh! Why return a child to a dangerous person?
It looks like normal mother behavior in this case. Certainly not at fault. The mother has suffered enough and should not be harmed.
Did she conspire with the alligator? Ridiculous overcharging. Let the poor woman grieve.
Yes, but gators usually are going to stuff you under an underwater ledge or sunken tree, not laying on a bank where another gator or predator can get it.
Her daughter doesn't go to school?
Prayer to the family. I don't know how single parents can do it. Hard enough to be a married dad...
Or there’s more to this story...
The kid clearly has level III autism and escape issues (the medical term is elopement risk). Probably non-verbal as well.
Raising these children is a tremendous challenge. Few tend to not make it past their 30s, mostly because they get themselves killed in accidents.
They like their prey to ripen a bit, so they stash it underwater for a few days.
Yikes! I spoke way too soon.
...or the gators?
Convict her of abuse? then send him back??? - that does not compute.
