My family had a convenience store in a Dallas suburb during the 70’s.
A kid about 4 or 5 years old came in alone and gathered a handful of candy. He slid Mom’s checkbook across the the counter to pay.
I asked if his mother knew he was getting candy and he said “yes ma’am “.
I called the number on the check to reach a panicked Mom. She had been working in the backyard and the boy had asked for candy. She gave him permission, thinking he meant from the bowl on the table inside.
He walked several blocks to the store and selected his treats with confidence. He knew the power of the checkbook. He just couldn’t write yet.
