It sounds to me like two depressed, struggling, confused young guys found each other. Robinson seems to have been in love, but the roommate doesn’t seem to have been. He never sounds warm or uses endearments in his replies to Robinson. IMHO, he was just using Robinson for convenience. His parents are probably devastated too.
My latest theory is that Robinson did this to prove his love to his roommate.
Which makes him even more of a pathetic loser.
