I have read that 11% of Bulgarians are Muslim. Probably remnants from the Ottoman wars.

Well, Bukgaria was ruled by the Ottoman Turks for nearly 500 years, from the 14th century.

Many Bukgars did convert to Islam, and converting to Islam changed your millet ie ethnicity to Turk (hence the phrase “going Turk”)
