My local shop verifies the coins as being pre-1964, and pays me on the number of coins, not the weight, although that would make sense as many show substantial wear and are unlikely to be at full weight.

Yep. That’s why my dealer weighs the total mass in ‘junk silver’ versus price per coin. I’ve seen it handled both ways. I’ve been using the same guy for over a decade now; he’s been very trustworthy.
