In a game of Russian roulette with a standard Colt revolver, the chances of instant death are one-in-six.
Terrifyingly, that’s the same as the odds of humanity being wiped out within 75 years – everyone dead in a cataclysmic and total breakdown of civilisation, according to Oxford University futurologist Toby Ord, an expert on the threat of artificial intelligence.
Does it sound impossibly bleak? His colleague Nick Bostrom is more pessimistic still. He rates the possibility of human extinction by the next century as one in four.
Pulitzer prize-winning writer Jared Diamond is even less hopeful, predicting our species’ chances of survival beyond 2050 – just 25 years away – are no better than evens, or 50/50.
Not so long ago, only oddballs in sandwich boards and evangelical cult leaders seriously believed ‘the end of the world is nigh’. The phrase itself was a comic cliche, so gloomy it was funny.
But the voices now warning of our impending extinction come from highly respected scientists, not kooky doom-sayers. They point to multiple existential threats faced by the human race: not only nuclear weapons, but rampant climate change, artificially engineered viruses and even malevolent AI capable of manufacturing its own super-weapons.

Given equality of arms, it only takes a 10:1 advantage in numbers to defeat any static defense. This has been proven time after time all throughout history. If you think you can remain hidden, well, guess again.
It surprises me how few people see that.
The world will end when God decides it is time. I don’t know when that is, so my answer to that question is as good as anyone elses.
the trick will be to survive, hidden, for about 6 months (and thru a winter).
that would kill off most of the population via starvation and various ‘struggles’
being remote would help but you also have to be ruthless... as the ones you’ll meet after that will be the toughest survivors
It has happened before, how many times? It will happen again.
Yes, but knowing that it will happen, one can stock up on popcorn and pick out a good seat to watch the proceedings.
Following those hard times, you will need to make alliances with others.
Oh crap. The world is ending!!! Again. (But THIS time I really mean it.) LOL!
Only God knows the time of existential events.
Does the Party Store have a section of decorations for this?
Exactly. Millennium + Tribulation
I think it was Ted turner who was also decrying the woes of “overpopulation” which is ridiculous seeing how the aorldxs population could fit into Texas with room to spare (not that you’d want to, but it shows how few people there are compared to how much land there actually is, much of which is tied up and off like it’s to us little people.)
Agree
As with most “experts”, they are most likely full of crapola.
If their predictions don’t come through, they should be placed in stocks and have the populace throw rotten food at them for a year or so.
Jaren is 87 years old. Guess who won't be around to be told he was wrong...
definitely. it’d be smart to have multiple states make agreements to unify in a time of national crisis which results in the collapse of the federal govt.
the larger the region, the better the chances of defending and surviving.
