In a game of Russian roulette with a standard Colt revolver, the chances of instant death are one-in-six.
Terrifyingly, that’s the same as the odds of humanity being wiped out within 75 years – everyone dead in a cataclysmic and total breakdown of civilisation, according to Oxford University futurologist Toby Ord, an expert on the threat of artificial intelligence.
Does it sound impossibly bleak? His colleague Nick Bostrom is more pessimistic still. He rates the possibility of human extinction by the next century as one in four.
Pulitzer prize-winning writer Jared Diamond is even less hopeful, predicting our species’ chances of survival beyond 2050 – just 25 years away – are no better than evens, or 50/50.
Not so long ago, only oddballs in sandwich boards and evangelical cult leaders seriously believed ‘the end of the world is nigh’. The phrase itself was a comic cliche, so gloomy it was funny.
But the voices now warning of our impending extinction come from highly respected scientists, not kooky doom-sayers. They point to multiple existential threats faced by the human race: not only nuclear weapons, but rampant climate change, artificially engineered viruses and even malevolent AI capable of manufacturing its own super-weapons.

So, grant funding is becoming scarce.
Well that is what the uk is working towards. In everg way they are trying to outdo Orwell. Its like its their mission.
except those that are off-grid.
they’re all set and have minimal interaction with the rest.
So is his ‘solution’ must be to send Europe and the rest of the West back to the Stone Age, while Russia, China, and India take over? (fyi, now that the Left has captured nearly all of the West except the US, they are going back to the Stone Age on their own, anyway)
Or is it to nuke China and India, and maybe Russia?
In other words, it’s easy to be a ‘futurist’ (my definition of the this term is “someone who needs to be committed”), because you NEVER have to solve anything, or even propose solutions to anything.
But the world can’t end in 25 years since the world is going to end in.....what is it now...4 years? 5 years?
How is the world going to end twice?
Seems like it was only 50 years ago that we had 25 years left before the end.
Way too late. Respected ecological expert Ted Danson informed us in 1988 that “In ten years, the oceans will be dead and mankind will soon follow.”
We are the Undead.
It ended so nice, we did it twice.
Zombies.
the end will come, but it will be disease in the third world cities. India will lose millions. Ditto Indonesia
I heard from someone at a religious retreat, when I was a young adult, that there was a woman hearing divine messages. The world was going to end in a year with two blue moons
Oh geeze. It disturbed me
I learned never to trust when people say they hear from God without, in my case, a Catholic- without Vatican intense research and approval
I never pay attention to these. I’ve been hearing end of works predictions before and after They are stupid. They mean nothing even if they happen to be true.
In the Gospel it is said no one knows. I’ve heard and refuted every argument against it. I adhere to the principle of it. Don’t dwell on the end. Just always be ready. That’s all
People love to tell me they know when it will end
But not open borders.
Hmmmm....
What rifle/cartridge combo is best for defense against rampaging climate changes? Asking for a friend.
😱OH MY GOD, WE ARE ALL GOING O DIE AGAIN!!! Wow this highly respected Oxford Asshat can’t even stick to a global disaster of the month, he has to roll a bunch together…..that tells us all that his predictions are huge and serious😱☠️
Toby Ord, another prophet, or profit?
I am of course talking about killer trees.
Only 5.43 years left.
