It’s not just dogs. Animals have instincts that humans don’t have. Humans might have had them a long time ago, but technology and “progress” and other things have probably bled those instincts right out of us.

Ever heard of “the hair standing up on the back of your neck”? It’s a real thing and I have felt that feeling before when I felt threatened. It’s a remnant of that natural instinct we all used to have, I suspect.

Snipers are taught to never look directly at the target individual until they begin sighting. Most people know they are being watched. We have wonderful capabilities that are rarely cultivated. You are right, people have allowed natural instincts to erode away.

The only dog that was actually attacking me stopped cold once I sited my pistol. I did not shoot. We declared a truce.
