Maybe it’s not the best advice, but when a dog of medium to large size approaches me and I’m not familiar with it, I get down on my knees and open my hands, remain calm and speak softly, keep your distance from the owner who they want to protect. When they see you have nothing in your hands and you are not a threat, the will leave you alone. They may still bark and look a bit threatening, but not harm you. It’s worked for me several times.
